The Materials Team is responsible for the development and optimization of materials for our revolutionary products. About The Job We are looking for a Materials Engineer in Costa Mesa, CA, that has a solid foundation in materials science and engineering first principles, and an intrinsic drive to build on that foundation. What You’ll Do Assist in the development and testing of new materials to meet engineering and performance specifications. Participate in the characterization and analysis of composite materials using techniques such as nondestructive testing, mechanical testing, and failure analysis. Work closely with senior engineers and mentors to develop professional engineering skills and knowledge. Contribute to the selection of materials for various applications considering factors such as mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and manufacturability. Define and conduct test plans and process substantiation protocols, review and analyze data. Support the team in supplier development and qualification. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve material-related issues and improve product reliability. Engage in continuous learning to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in materials science and engineering. Document experimental procedures and results, and present findings to the team and stakeholders. Use first principles physics as a basis for every decision. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s or higher in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. 1-3 years of materials science or composite experience in a fast-paced environment. Understanding of composite material processing and characterization techniques. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to apply engineering principles to practical applications. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to obtain and hold a U.S. Top Secret security clearance as needed. Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new challenges in a fast-paced environment. Preferred Qualifications Hands-on experience with composites, manufacturing, and/or testing. Demonstrated ownership of a comprehensive material characterization effort. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) software and materials simulation tools.
